Alternative 1: Kalhovd – Stordalsbu – Mogen – Skinnarbu
Monday – Friday
Bus from Oslo/Notodden, arrives at Mæl 13:47, here you can jump on the local bus to Atrå at 14:15, wherefrom you’ll change to the Kalhovd bus which takes you on the Hardangervidda plateau. The bus arrives at Kalhovd Tourist Cabin at 15:30. A three-course dinner and a good bed are waiting, before you start on your hiking trip on Norway’s biggest national park.
Alternately, take the bus to Stegaros and stay at Maarfjellstogo cabin, self-catering cabin. Stay an extra night and take one of the many fishing and sightseeing trips that are offered here.
Continue on the trip further to Stordalsbu. A new accommodation awaits in one of DNT’s (Norwegian Tourist Association) self-catering cabins. The trip takes around 5 hours.
The next day, another 5 hours hike is waiting. This time to Mogen Tourist Cabin, which was awarded as the best dining experience in mountain-Norway.
Spend an extra day at Mogen Tourist Cabin and experience parts of the nature and culture from this roadless community at Møsvatn. There are very good fishing prospects along the Kvenna river and a path with historical points which can fit well for a evening walk. There are some sound pillars along this path, named Kvennavegen, where you can hear Oddgeir Bruaset narrating local history.
At 11.00 and 15.00 Fjellvåken II leaves for Skinnarbu. The boat ride takes about 2 hours. Talk to the boat driver if you are going back to Rjukan and need a taxi. Special prices is negotiated, and a taxi will be waiting for you when you arrive at Skinnarbu. The taxi will bring you back to Rjukan, and RjukanEkspressen takes you back to Notodden/Oslo at 13:20, 15:20 or 19.20.
Monday – Friday
Same start as the first roundtrip but instead of getting off at Kalhovd Tourist Cabin, you continue to Synken. At 17:30 MB Mårfjord will take you over the idyllic Mårvatn lake to Mårbu Tourist Cabin or Mårbu Farm and Mountain lodge. The boat trip takes about 40 minutes.
At Mårbu it’s possible to rent a boat and have an evening trip to try your fishing luck. Do not despair if the fish doesn’t bite. Both Mårbu Farm and Mountain lodge and Mårbu Tourist Cabin are in service so you don’t necessarily need to get your own dinner.
The next morning begins the 7 hours long trip to Lågaros, which is one of DNT’s self-catering cabins. At Lågaros will probably be ready for a good sleep before the last hike along the 5 hours long trail to Mogen Tourist Cabin awaits the next morning. At Mogen Tourist Cabin you can choose to stay an extra night or to try to catch the Fjellvåken II catamaran the same day.
