Hardangervidda National Park Centre

Hardangervidda National Park Centre has a priceawarded exhibition upon nature and wild reindeer on Hardangervidda. 

The Hardangervidda national park centre at Skinnarbu is located at the gateway of one of Europes largest national parks, Hardangervidda. The centre is located by road (Rv 37) between Rjukan and Rauland.

The awardwinning nature and reindeer exhibition contains 22 interactive installations as well as a cinema. Follow the migration of the wild reindeer in prehistoric times and see different tools made by man more than 17 000 years ago in the south of France (Dordogne).

Hardangervidda National Park Centre has a digital library containing information on plants, animals and related issues (mainly onspecies from Hardangervidda). The entire exhibiton is in English and Norwegian.

The exhibition includes 6 sections:
  • An introductory meeting - a section for the senses where the experience of the wild reindeer takes centre stage.
  • A scientific section where the biology and ecology of the wild reindeer is presented. Here we will discover where the wild reindeer is located on the globe, and information about the various wild reindeer areas in Norway.
  • A historical section about the origins of the wild reindeer, its roaming patterns, and its relationship to humans. 
  • A section that covers the management and research connected to the wild reindeer on the mountain plateau.
  • A "red-light" section that will present the various challenges and threaths facing the wild reindeer today such as the loss of habitats,increasing human presence,infrastructure, etc. 
  • A section where the audience can reflect upon various scenarios connected to the wild reindeer and Hardangervidda. 

In addition to the exhibition, the Hardangervidda National Park Centre offers an intranet library on the Hardangervidda National Park.

Furthermore, the centre has a nature laboratory for student and schools.
