In the saboteurs' footsteps with Telemark Opplevelser
Together with Telemark Opplevelser you can walk the real and original saboteur tour, crossing the very Vemork gorge where the saboteurs themselves went the night they were to blow up the heavy water plant at Vemork. After climbing up from the canyon, follow the old railway route to the museum at Vemork. On the tour you will hear the story of one of the most knowned and famous actions during the whole of World War II.
They try to link up this trip with today's society, e.g. what does everyday life require of us?
The tour takes 4-5 hours including a lunch break. Telemark Opplevelser also has the opportunity to arrange lunch.
A visit to the Vemork museum, which is perhaps best known as the heavy water museum, is a must when in Rjukan. Here you get an insight into the story where it actually happened! The story of the amazing industrial adventure that spanned from the early 1900's and the dramatic war history of Rjukan during World War II.
The story of industrialization is told in the unique permanent exhibition "Industrial Place Rjukan". This gives you an introduction to the history that underlies Rjukan now on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
NEWS! Excavation of the heavy water cellar is underway and the basement is found intact. Guiding in the basement this summer!
Cafe Vemork offers lunch and dinner.
Rjukan is on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The story is complex and exciting. We can arrange guides on either hiking through Rjukan's streets or as guides around Rjukan in their own bus.
Krossobanen is a cable car that was built by Norsk Hydro as a gift to locals so that they could enjoy the sun in winter time. Krossobanen are referred to as the EHS measures of the time. Today, Krossobanen is primarily a tourist attraction which in 5 minutes takes you up to Gvepseborg at the foot of Hardangervidda. At the top await fantastic views of Rjukan and many hiking opportunities, and not least the newly opened Rjukan climbing park, which is not only for children, but at least as much for businesses.
Lunch or dinner at Café Krossobanen
At Gvepseborg you also find the cafe "Krossobanen Kafé" which has a fantastic panoramic view of Rjukan and Gaustatoppen. This is a great place and you can add either lunch or dinner.
Rjukan climbing park
Rjukan climbing park is not just a park for play and fun, here it is also mastery and learning in focus. All the way back to the story of "The battle of the heavy water".
The trails can be compared to the military training the saboteurs also had to go through. First you are recruited in the exercise track, then you go on a green track where you train to become an aspirant. As an aspirant, you complete the blue trail and a zip line leads you to "the gran finale" which is the red trail, and then you are a saboteur!
As a saboteur, you climb into the Halifax, which hangs high up in the trees and throws out "in parachute", as the saboteurs did when they came with a Halifax from England and jumped into the parachute and landed on Hardangervidda.
In the middle of the trail you meet the "hunter" that the saboteurs also met at Hardangervidda. The saboteurs had the choice to shoot the hunter in danger of revealing the operation or trusting him. They chose to trust him. You also have to rely on the "hunter" you meet in the trees to manage to pass him.
The highlight may be when you come to the "factory". Are you able to bomb the heavy water system?
Trip to Gaustatoppen with Gaustabanen
Gaustatoppen majestically rests on Rjukan and is on the "to do list" to many. The tour takes about 2 hours one way. At the top awaits great views. On a clear day you can actually see 1/6 of Norway! Gaustatoppen is one of the few mountains that is accessible to most. You do not have to strive on foot, because there is a path inside the mountain, Gaustabanen.
Gaustabanen was built in 1958 to secure radio lines. During the Cold War, the facility was closed and remained a secret until 2010. Then it opened to public traffic.
Top secret dining
Top Secret Dining is a dinner experience at the Gaustatoppen. Excitement, surprises, good food and entertainment are on the agenda when we invite to dinner in NATO's old eavesdrop room.
Hardangervidda National Park Center
Hardangervidda National Park Center is next door to Skinnarbu National Park Hotel and has a fantastic interactive exhibition about the wild reindeer and nature on Hardangervidda. Hardangervidda National Park Center has won several international awards for its great installations. The center must be experienced.
Put the icing on the cake with some entertainment along the way. Here we have actors, folk dancers or musicians who can perform along the way.
